Buying at Summersgills
You can bid in person, by telephone, or online for all items in our auctions.
Our online platforms allow you to watch and listen live, placing bids in real time from anywhere.

Important: Placing a bid is a legally binding commitment to purchase the item if you are successful.
Buyer’s Premium & Charges
A buyer’s premium of 18% + VAT is added to the hammer price of each lot.
If you choose to bid via third-party online platforms, additional charges may apply depending on the provider.
Viewing
You are welcome to view items at our Auction House from Tuesday to Thursday prior to each auction.
Please note: Viewing is not available on auction days.
Ways to Bid
There are four ways to bid at Summersgills:
1. Bid in Person
Join us in the auction room on sale day.
Once you have registered and received your bidding number, you are free to bid. Whether you are an experienced bidder or attending for the first time, our friendly team will be on hand to assist.
When the hammer falls on your bid, a legally binding contract is formed and the item becomes yours.
2. Commission Bids
If you are unable to attend, you can leave a commission (absentee) bid and we will bid on your behalf.
Simply provide the maximum amount you are willing to pay, and the auctioneer will aim to secure the lot for you at the lowest possible price.

3. Telephone Bids
We can call you during the auction so you can bid live over the phone.
A member of our team will contact you shortly before your chosen lot comes up, giving you time to prepare.

Please note:
- Bidding online is quick and easy — always be sure before placing a bid
- There may be a slight delay in audio, so we recommend following the on-screen bidding
- Do not leave your bids until the last moment, as the hammer may fall before your bid is received
